The mayor of Portland in Oregon reechoed his previous call for federal troops to leave the US city, said CNN.
Mayor Ted Wheeler accused the federal troops of using abusive tactics against protesters.
He told CNN: “They are sharply escalating the situation.”
Since the killing of African American George Floyd in Minneapolis in May, the locals were on nightly protests.
Mayor Wheeler said there were “dozens if not hundreds of federal troops” in the city.
He added: “Their presence here is actually leading to more violence and more vandalism.
They’re not wanted here. We haven’t asked them here. In fact, we want them to leave.”
Oregon Governor Kate Brown echoes the same sentiments.
She described the presence of federal troops in the city as “purely political theatre” from the Donald Trump administration.
Brown told MSNBC that she had asked the federal government on Tuesday to remove the troops.
She said: “You are escalating an already challenging situation.”
Since President Donald Trump deployed federal agents on Thursday, a crowd of demonstrators got tear-gassed.
47 Straight Days
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf claimed the protest is now on its 47 straight days.
He defended the agents against the assembled “anarchists.”
Moreover, he blamed state and city authorities for failing to “restore order.”
He added: “(The) city of Portland has been under siege for 47 straight days”.
Wolf Should Resign
Conversely, Rep. Veronica Escobar called for the resignation of Wolf after federal authorities deployed tear gas on protesters in Portland.
Escobar blasted Wolf on Twitter, replying to an interview she shared of Wolf on Fox News.
She accused him of “extraordinary vanity and arrogance.”
“It’s one thing to ‘protect’ federal buildings, quite another to for @DHSgov to behave like a secret police force.
(They used force) in the shocking way we have seen on video. “Acting” @DHS_Wolf needs to resign.”
