Nickelodeon’s post celebrating Pride month has sparked some debate in social media on Spongebob’s sexuality.
On Saturday evening, Nickelodeon posted in its Twitter account, it says,
“Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month”
The tweet includes three of Nickelodeon’s famous characters, SpongeBob from SpongeBob Squarepants, Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger, and Korra from the Legend of Korra. All featured in a rainbow theme.
Some fans are speculating that this is Nickelodeon’s way of validating without saying it out loud, that Spongebob is gay. Others asserted that he is not gay but an asexual bi-romantic.
Korra’s creators already confirmed before that Korra is in a same-sex relationship with another Legend of Korra character, while Schwoz Schwartz’s actor Michael D. Cohen on the other hand is a transman.
In 2005, SpongeBob’s creator, Stephen Hillenburg said in an interview about SpongeBob and Patrick, that “we never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual.”
