NBA’s Game 1 for its NBA Finals did not fare well in viewership ratings.
The NBA Finals opening game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat only hauled around 7.41 million viewers, Hollywood Reporter reported.
The lowest number since the first time the NBA started regularly recording its viewership rating.
According to Hollywood Reporter, it is even lower than the last time it had recorded a low turnout of viewers in 2007.
In 2007, more than a decade ago, the NBA Finals’ Game 3 only recorded around 8 million viewers.
One would think that with a lot of people still in quarantine, the viewership should have been higher.
However, the viewership is 45% less than last year’s Finals’ opening game between the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors.
The NBA finals started four months late than its usual start date, mainly due to the coronavirus.
Although it is not the only American sports league that seems to be suffering because of late starts and the pandemic.
Popular American hockey sports league, NHL, also started several months late.
Moreover, the and got 60% less rating, per Hollywood Reporter.
The Game has Become Too Political
According to a Breitbart report, it seems that a lot of people found the famous American basketball league too political.
The recent Harris Poll survey on NBA fans reflects this thought.
The survey group found out that many fans are starting to divert from the league due to players bringing politics into the game.
According to the poll, 39% of some 2,000 fans answered they are watching fewer games due to politics.
A sentiment that also reflects the President’s opinion against the league.
US President Donald Trump tweeted before that “people are tired of watching the highly political NBA.”
According to him, the NBA’s ratings are “way down” and will not be coming back.
