Hannibal star, Mads Mikkelsen, has officially replaced Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp, from his Fantastic Beasts series role of Gellert Grindelwald.
The Warner Bros. studio announced the news in a statement.
They also said that the latest Fantastic Beasts series is currently in production and that they will release the next installment on July 15, 2022.
The second person who had played the role in the series, Johnny Depp, resigned from the role after he lost a libel suit in the UK.
In 2018, the British newspaper, the Sun, published a story with a title calling Depp a wifebeater.
The article came after his ex-wife, Amber Heard, accused Depp of physical abuse, resulting in their divorce.
In fact, during its hype, a lot of Harry Potter fans pressured Warner Bros. and JK Rowling from casting Depp in the role.
Eventually, the Royal Courts of Justice released its ruling siding with the Sun saying its article is “substantially true.”
A few days after, Depp shared that Warner Bros. asked him to resign from the Grindelwald role, a decision he respects and supports.
Before Depp resigned from his role as Grindelwald, the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts series is already in production.
After Depp departs from the series, there are rumors that Warner Bros. is recasting the Grindelwald role.
During that time, two names on the possible replacement have surfaced. One is Colin Farrel, who played Grindelwald in the first movie. Also, it seems he’s the number one choice for fans.
However, it is impossible due to conflict on shooting for his other movie, the Batman, where he plays the Penguin.
The other is Mikkelsen, known for his role as the cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, in Hannibal.
Previously, Mikkelsen denied the rumors of getting the role. Last week, he even shared he is still waiting for a phone call from Warner Bros.
