Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain’s guitar was sold for $6 million in an auction, said BBC.
Cobain played with the said guitar in a rare acoustic concert.
Cobain played the retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E during a legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1993.
This was just five months before he died.
Julien’s Auctions said, the guitar that was sold at $6.01m after fees were the most expensive ever sold at auction.
Bidding in Los Angeles opened at $1million.
Peter Freedman won the bidding.
He is founder of Rode Microphones.
This Nirvana’s acoustic performance was for the MTV Unplugged series on November 18, 1993.
It is now considered one of history’s greatest live performances.
The winning bidder Freedman said he planned to take the guitar on a worldwide tour.
And his plans for the proceeds? It will go to supporting the performing arts.
According to the auction house, he described buying the guitar as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The guitar came with its case, said the report.
Cobain, himself, had decorated it with a poster from the band Poison Idea’s 1990 album, Feel the Darkness.
Before this, the most expensive guitar sold in history was a Fender Stratocaster.
It was used by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.
It made almost $4m at a charity sale in June 2019.
What Else Has Been Sold?
In October 2019, Cobain’s stained, cigarette-burned cardigan unwashed in nearly three decades has sold at auction for $334,000.
He wore the green button-up during the band’s same MTV “Unplugged” performance in 1993.
It was not cleaned since he last wore it.
The iconic piece of clothing is now reportedly the most expensive sweater ever sold at auction.
Darren Julien called Cobain’s mohair cardigan “the holy grail of any article of clothing that he ever wore”.
Julien is the president of Julien’s Auction.
The artist achieved colossal success after forming Nirvana in 1987.
But struggled with fame, depression, and drug addiction, said the report.
He killed himself in April 1994, age 27.
