North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-Un, shed tears during his speech on the celebration of the 75th anniversary of North Korea’s Worker’s party over the weekend, the Korea Times, and The Guardian reported.
According to reports, almost one-third of his speech includes the 75th anniversary of the ruling party, his gratitude, and apology towards North Koreans, per Times.
The people “have placed trust, as high as the sky, and as deep as the sea” in Kim, he said.
However, the third generation Kim failed to live up to it, he said.
“I am really sorry for that,” said Kim in his speech.
Kim took his glasses off in the middle of his speech to wipe off his tears.
This show of emotion is quite different from his previous speeches, said experts, per Times.
Experts also added that the speech aims to elicit more public support for Kim during North Korea’s “three hardships.”
According to the Times, those hardships are natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and international sanctions.
“Kim is feeling a lot of pressure on his leadership,” Hong Min, North Korea’s director at the Korean Institute for National Unification told the Times.
North Korea’s leader also worries the people might get swayed or upset because of his leadership, Hong added.
Moreover, at the end of Kim’s speech, he asked the people to extend their full support in him, showing his concern over North Korea’s stability, Hong concluded.
Other experts also view Kim’s speech as a message to the international community.
It shows he is also a compassionate global leader, per Times.
The Unveiling of New Ballistic Missile and a Message to the US
Kim delivered his sympathizing speech amid soldiers and the unveiling of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
Experts dubbed the new weapon as one of the world’s largest missiles.
The action is a subtle affront to its talks with the US on denuclearization.
According to the Guardian, Kim warned he would “fully mobilize” his nuclear weapons against those who will threaten North Korea.
Kim’s message is one that the US should be wary of.
It shows how unstable the US relationship is with North Korea.
Moreover, it is possible that a different approach to the country should be done in the future.
A problem that the next US president has to face.
