On Saturday morning, the hashtag #ImpeachBarr trended on Twitter following news of Attorney General William Barr’s attempt to oust US Attorney Geoffrey Berman out of his office.
Jennifer Taub, a law professor said in her tweet that,
Some district representative also aired their opinions via Twitter, one such is from Bill Pascrell Jr, representative of the 9th district of New Jersey, he said,
Some petitions were also put up by people who wanted to impeach Barr.
On Friday, Berman got news of his alleged resignation from his office through a press conference from the Attorney General.
Berman said in a statement, “I have not resigned, and I have no intention of resigning my position, to which I was appointed by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. I will step down when a presidentially appointed nominee is confirmed by the Senate. Until then, our investigation will move forward without delay or interruption. I cherish every day that I work with the men and women of this Office to pursue justice without fear or favor – and intend to ensure that this Office’s important cases continue unimpeded.”
Berman has been the US attorney for Manhattan since 2018.
Berman had prosecuted and investigated some of President Donald Trump’s associates, including Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen.
He is also leading an investigation into American financier, Jeffrey Epstein.
According to CNN, a Justice Department official told them that Berman was offered other positions at Justice, but he declined.
Another CNN source told them that on Friday, Barr asked Berman in person to resign.
A CNN report said that there could be investigations inside the US attorney’s office and career prosecutors on a forced ouster of Berman, said a CNN report.
Trump nominated Securities and Exchange Commision chairman Jay Clayton to succeed Berman.
