How Christine Dacera, a Filipina’s Death, Turned into a WitchHunt

Christine Dacera next to a police line

On New Year’s Eve, Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight attendant, Christine Dacera, was found “unresponsive” in a hotel bathtub after partying with a group of men. According to reports, some of them are friends and acquaintances.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) first concluded that it was a r*pe/slay case, Rappler, a local news outlet, reported.

Moreover, the police statement triggered the public to condemn all men who were present at the party.

In fact, a lot of prominent personalities have even joined the call for justice for the victim. Also, the hashtags #JusticeforChristineDacera, and #ProtectDrunkGirls trended a few days ago.

Many have also shared the pictures and names of the men who are present at the party. Those actions started a witch hunt against the men present at the party, even though the investigation is still ongoing.

A Police Manhunt Without any Arrest Warrant

The Chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Debold Sinas, also issued a threat against the suspects. He told the suspects in a statement, “surrender within seventy-two hours” or the police will hunt them down. He also said that they know who they are and that their family should turn them over to the police. However, according to Rappler, the PNP does not have an arrest warrant against the suspects.

A few days ago, the police detained three suspects who are reportedly friends of Dacera, per Rappler.

Those three are John Pascual Dela Serna III, Rommel Galido, and John Paul Halili.

However, on Wednesday, the Makati Prosecutor’s Office has ordered the release of the three. According to Prosecutor General Benedicto Malconento, they need more evidence to determine if the case was really a r*pe/slay. Also, Malcontento said that the “complaint is premature” and incomplete, per the Inquirer.

New Information and Facts Show It’s Not R*pe

New facts and information about the incident have also cast doubt on the initial statement of the police.

For example, a medico-legal report stated that the victim died of a “ruptured aortic aneurysm.” Also, Malconento added that there’s no such thing as semen found on the victim’s private part. In fact, the police report did not provide any evidence that Dacera was assaulted se–ually.

Moreover, the victim’s companions in the party outed themselves as gay and testified that all men in the party are also gay.

In fact, one of her friends, Gregorio de Guzman, said he even tried to revive Dacera with CPR, per a press conference. Another friend, Valentine Rosales, said that none of them “are capable of abusing Tin…none of her friends.” Rosales also added that they took care of Dacera.

All of Dacera’s companions who are present in the press conference maintain there was no foul play involved.

However, Dacera’s family disputed the reports that she died of natural causes. In fact, they’ve already sought another autopsy report.
