Federal officers have been arresting protesters in Portland indiscriminately while using unmarked cars since July 14, said an OPB report.
Videos of arrests have been going around on Twitter since July 16 along with the hashtags #PoliceState #PortlandProtests.
Moreover, according to civilian reports, the officers don’t have any identifying markers such as badges on their uniforms.
According to a Department of Homeland Security report, “Portland has been under siege for 47 straight days”.
The Federal Government deployed the US Marshals SOG and the Customs and Border Protection’s BORTAC to protect the state’s properties during the protests.
However, people who are far from federal properties are also arrested, according to interviews conducted by the OPB.
It is also not clear whether the arrested individuals have any criminal offenses, said OPB.
Homeland Security Tags Protesters as Anarchists
On July 16, the Department of Homeland Security released a report detailing the protest events in Portland since May 29.
The DHS identifies the subjects in the list of events as “violent anarchists”.
Lack of Action from the Local Government
In the DHS’ report, the DHS also blames the local government of Portland for failing to respond to the “attacks”.
DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf claims that the local leaders did not address the “violent criminals in the communities.
Instead, they focused their blames on the law enforcement, he said.
The lack of “response” has emboldened the “violent mob as it escalates violence day after day,” he added.
The siege can end if state and local officials decide to take appropriate actions,” Wolf concluded.
Local Leaders Response to the Deployment of Officers
The deployment is “clearly a coordinated strategy from the White House,” said Mayor Ted Wheeler of Portland.
“Remove troop presence now,” he added.
Kate Brown, Oregon’s Governor also condemned the deployment of Federal Officers in Portland.
“The President is failing to lead this nation,” Brown said.
The deployment of federal officers “to patrol the streets of Portland”, is a “blatant abuse of power by the federal government,” she added.
