Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team announced that their cars will don a black livery for the 2020 season.
This serves as a statement that the reigning champions “stand against racism and all forms of discrimination,” said CNN.
Team drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will also wear all-black overalls.
This is opposed to their usual all-white, said the report.
Six-time world champion Hamilton has been at the heart of the call for increased diversity in the sport.
Speaking of the new paint-job, Hamilton said:
“When I spoke to (team prinicpal) Toto (Wolff) about my hopes for what we could achieve as a team,
“I said it was so important that we stand united.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Toto and the Mercedes board for taking the time to listen,
“…to talk, and to really understand my experiences and passion,
“And for making this important statement that we are willing to change and improve as a business.”
Two Of A Kind
While Hamilton is the only Black driver on the Formula One grid, there is also another lone black driver in NASCAR.
Like Hamilton, NASCAR’s Bubba Wallace is also making a headway in his own backyard.
Wallace has long fought for the removal of the Confederate flag in NASCAR facilities.
NASCAR just this month, banned the Confederate flag at NASCAR tracks and facilities.
But this goes without a push back from ravenous fans.
Fans opposing the ban launched a motorcade plastered with the Confederate flag.
Call For Diversity
Former Formula One chief, Bernie Ecclestone, said often “Black people are more racist than White people.”
Moreover, nothing had been done about addressing issues of diversity and inclusion in the sport.
Citing people were “too busy trying to win races or find sponsors or something.”
This statement has met consternation within the Formula One community, including by Hamilton,
Hamilton called Ecclestone’s comments “ignorant and uneducated.”
