What happened in Thanksgiving didn’t stay in thanksgiving, in the case of Dr. Deborah Birx.
Health officers have been warning people to lessen their travel and stay inside their houses during the holidays due to increasing COVID-19 cases in the country.
In fact, on December 2, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released an advisory for it.
According to the CDC’s advisory, “postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.”
However, it seems that a lot of people are having a hard time following the advisory.
In fact, the TSA tweeted that it had screened more than one million people at airport checkpoints nationwide on Sunday.
A sign that public health pleas to avoid travel is being ignored, amidst the alarming surge of COVID-19 cases.
According to Lisa Farbsten, TSA’s spokesperson, that’s already the “third consecutive day” that the checkpoint volume surpassed a million.
She also reminded people to wear their masks.
Dr. Deborah Brix Under Fire for Violating the Advisory
It seems even the White House Coronavirus Task Force Coordinator, Dr. Deborah Birx, found the advisory difficult to abide.
According to an NBC report, the day after Thanksgiving, the health official “traveled to one of her vacation properties” in Delaware. Also, three generations of her family were with her. They belong to two different households.
The action was frowned upon by a lot of people because Dr. Birx is a high-ranking health official. In fact, before Thanksgiving, Dr. Birx warned the public to stay “vigilant” and celebrate in their immediate households.
The public has since then taken to social media to criticize her for violating her own words. Steve Hilton even calls her a “hypocrite.”
Opinion: Dr. Birx’s Non-Abiding Action is Not Good for the US
How can you expect the public to follow the rules when leaders themselves wouldn’t walk the talk. Unlike civilians, officials should always regard themselves in higher standards, especially in following advisories, in Birx’s case, her advisory.
Dr. Birx’s action during the holidays was problematic, especially now that the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths are increasing every day. It only reflects her disregard for the rules she has set herself.
