San Diego has now made it more accessible to San Diegans to take COVID-19 tests through an added a new testing site option.

The county opened on Monday, a new site at the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy, County News Center reported.

Consul Carlos Gonzales Gutierrez announced the news during a press conference in Little Italy.

The new site was opened to “encourage testing and diagnosis among the Latino community,” said the Consul.

COVID-19 testing is “highly important,” says Barbara Jimenez, Regional Director of Health and Human Services Agency, at the press conference.

Moreover, it is also “free”, “confidential”, and a “critical part” of the community’s “public health response” while vaccines are still unavailable.

According to San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, walk-in and free will be available every Monday, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Furthermore, the Mexican Consulate will be part of a 14-day rotating COVID-19 testing program.

The program will focus on hard-hit communities in the county, especially areas with huge Latino and immigrant populations.

Other identified locations for the rotating program are San Luis Rey Church in Oceanside and St. Anthony Padua in the National City, as per 10 News.

More locations will be announced soon.

Jimenez hopes that the testing site will allow the county to reach “a very important population.”

“We are prioritizing our response” to the health inequities in the Latino community, Fletcher said, as per 10 News

According to Gutierrez, it is necessary for communities to feel safe and understand that they can access public health assistance no matter what people’s migratory status is.

Increasing Sites for Free COVID-19 Testing

Last month, the county of San Diego added a new site at the San Ysidro Port of Entry PedEast to encourage essential workers who cross the border daily.

In fact, aside from the sites in Little Italy and the San Ysidro Port of Entry, five more testing sites across San Diego offer free COVID-19 testing.

Moreover, the following are the sites that offer free COVID-19 testing in the county:

  • California State University, San Marcos
  • San Diego State University Parking Lot 17-B
  • University of San Diego Parking Lot
  • Tubman-Chavez Community Center
  • Mar Vista High School
