The highest level of protection of pangolin, a mammal that resembles armadillo, is taking precedence over everything else as part of China’s crackdown on wildlife trade, said an Associated Press report.
Pangolin will join the ranks of animals receiving top-level protection such as giant pandas, Tibetan antelopes, and red-crowned cranes.
Some Chinese consider pangolin meat a delicacy and its scales dried ground up are used as traditional medicine.
Most scientists say that the pangolin most likely served as an intermediary animal in transmitting the novel Coronavirus from bats to humans.
Although the National Forestry did not mention the virus outbreak being the reason for the measure, it was perfectly timed with the pandemic and one could draw a conclusion that it might be the obvious reason.
