San Diego – San Diego County Officials requested the deployment of the California National Guard in La Mesa due to days of continuous protests.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the California National Guard will supplement the local police force’s effort in securing important infrastructures and in preventing the destruction of properties in the city.
Their presence is said to ensure the maintenance of order and safety as people are exercising their right to protest. For the critics, the deployment of troops will just “further the violence against people of color.”
CBS8 reported that protests in different parts of California had been mostly peaceful but areas like Sacramento, Los Angeles, and other cities had violent clashes with the law enforcement units.
The numerous protests were sparked by George Floyd’s death on May 25 in Minneapolis.
