There is an unofficial rule in the military, to not speak against the current US President. According to an MSNBC report, this practice is slowly being shattered as current and former military officials start speaking out against the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Former Admiral Mike Mullen said that he can no longer remain silent.
James Mattis, former Defense Secretary, broke his silence and in a letter that was posted in the Atlantic, accuses Trump of using the military to violate the Constitution. He wrote that “Trump is the first President in my lifetime who tries to divide the American People”. He added, that the people “must reject and hold accountable those in offices who would make a mockery of our Constitution.”
Previously, he declined to speak out against Trump saying that it is not good for democracy and would threaten the military’s apolitical stance. That period of silence did not last long, for Mattis, the President’s response to the death of George Floyd had triggered enormous public disapproval.
