Cal Fire San Diego identified the skydiver who died while in Chula Vista airspace, said a CBS8 report.
He is San Diego resident, Joseph James Wingen.
Earlier reports withheld the name of the skydiver.
According to authorities and representatives for Skydive San Diego, there were no malfunctions in his parachute.
Also, the parachute opened as expected, they added.
Wingen’s Kin Speaks Up
The kin of Wingen issued a statement, the victim’s brother Jonas Wingen spoke on the behalf of the family:
“Joe (Joseph) was skydiving yesterday solo, he was happy and super excited to be jumping.
“He jumped and deployed his parachute, everything was fine, and something happened while he was descending.
“We are not 100 percent sure on what happened, we will find out in the next few days?
“Maybe a heart attack? We don’t know yet.”
Firefighter Killed In Motorcycle Crash
Authorities reported a firefighter killed over the weekend in a suspected DUI motorcycle crash near Lakeside.
Ryan Ferrara, 39, crashed into a parked vehicle in the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
This is according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office and California Highway Patrol.
CHP public-affairs Officer Jeff Christy said they suspect alcohol or drugs is a factor in the collision.
“(It) is still under investigation with possible charges pending.”
San Diego Fire Department’s Statement
San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said his “hearts are broken by the news” of the death of Ferrara.
Moreover, Ferrara spent 13 years with the city emergency-services agency.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department called him a “beloved member of [their] fire family.”
Ferrara also devoted his first 13 years with the Lifeguards of San Diego prior to his 13 years with SDFD.
Also, Ferrara serves as a San Diego lifeguard in Pacific Beach.
Besides, he is also a longtime instructor for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.
