New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) slammed US President Donald Trump on Sunday, about a New York Times report on the President’s tax evasion.
AOC “paid thousands of dollars a year in taxes” in 2016 and 2017, she wrote in her tweet. The political firebrand worked “as a bartender” before she became a representative.
However, the US President only paid “$750” a year, during those same years, AOC added.
AOC also compared Trump’s contribution to funding communities, which according to her, are less compared to “waitresses & undocumented immigrants” contributions.
The representative’s comments came after a New York Times report on the President’s tax activity of “more than two decades.”
According to the Times, his tax information shows “struggling properties,” massive write-offs, and debts amounting to “hundreds of millions.”
Trump only “paid $750 in federal income taxes” each year, in 2016 and 2017, the Times reported.
However, a Trump Organization lawyer, Alan Garten, told the Times that most of “Times facts “appear to be inaccurate.”
Trump has “paid tens of millions of dollars in personal taxes to the federal government,” Garten told the Times.
However, Times accuses Garten of “conflating” Trump’s personal taxes with “other federal taxes.”
Why It Is Relevant
He is the President of the United States, the highest public office in the country.
According to the Times, the President’s tax activities show a different story from the one he portrays in public.
The New York Times reported that the US President has paid “no income tax” for ten years from the past fifteen years.
The reason? He has reported more loss of money, than the ones he made.
In addition, the Times claims that his tax records show that due to his financial issues, he “depends more and more” in gaining money from businesses that have a direct conflict of interest with his presidential duties.
